Before your procedure
To proceed with the fixed price package, you will first need to book an initial consultation with a Urology consultant.
During this appointment, your consultant will review your symptoms and medical history and examine the swelling. They will discuss whether hydrocele repair is appropriate for you and explain the procedure, potential risks and expected recovery.
You may require an ultrasound scan or other investigations to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other possible causes of scrotal swelling.
If surgery is clinically appropriate, your consultant will refer you onto the Fixed Price Package pathway.
You will undergo a clinical pre-assessment to confirm your suitability for surgery and the fixed price package. Your clinical team will review your medical history, medications and allergies and provide instructions about preparing for your procedure.

During your stay
Your hospital fee is included in the fixed price package, along with the anaesthetist fee and your consultant’s fee for carrying out the unilateral hydrocele repair.
Hydrocele repair, also known as a hydrocelectomy, is usually performed under general or spinal anaesthetic.
During the procedure, your surgeon makes a small incision in the scrotum and drains the fluid surrounding the testicle. The hydrocele sac is then removed or repaired to help prevent fluid from building up again. The wound is usually closed with dissolvable stitches.
The procedure typically takes less than an hour. You will be monitored in the recovery area afterwards and can normally return home the same day.
After your procedure
Some swelling, bruising and discomfort around the scrotum are normal after hydrocele repair and can take several weeks to settle.
Your clinical team will provide instructions on caring for your wound, managing discomfort and gradually returning to your normal activities.
Supportive underwear may help reduce swelling and discomfort while the area heals. You should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting until your consultant advises that it is safe to resume these activities.
You should seek medical advice if you develop rapidly increasing swelling, severe or worsening pain, fever, discharge from the wound, difficulty passing urine or other symptoms that concern you.
Follow-up care
Your package includes up to one follow-up consultation with your consultant.
During your follow-up, your consultant can assess how your wound is healing, review any remaining swelling or discomfort and discuss your recovery.
If you have any concerns before your scheduled follow-up, contact your clinical team for advice.

Your consultant will explain how hydrocele repair is performed, its potential benefits and risks and what you can expect during your recovery.
Any investigations required to confirm your diagnosis or determine your suitability for surgery will also be discussed.
If unilateral hydrocele repair is clinically appropriate, you can be referred onto the Fixed Price Package pathway.
Pre-assessment
You will undergo a clinical pre-assessment to confirm your suitability for the procedure and eligibility for the package.
Your medical history, medications and allergies will be reviewed, and you will receive instructions about preparing for surgery, including eating, drinking and taking your usual medication.
Price confirmation
Once your suitability is confirmed, your £3,230 fixed price will be agreed and confirmed before your procedure is booked.
Your procedure
Your unilateral hydrocele repair will be carried out by an experienced consultant, supported by our specialist clinical team.
The fluid surrounding the affected testicle is drained and the hydrocele sac is removed or repaired to help prevent the fluid from building up again.
The procedure typically takes less than an hour, and you can normally return home the same day following a period of recovery.
Follow-up care
Your package includes up to one consultant follow-up appointment.
During this appointment, your consultant will review your recovery, wound healing and any residual swelling or discomfort and advise you about returning to your usual activities.

About fixed pricing
Eligibility for Fixed Price Packages is determined through a pre-assessment process, which ensures the package is clinically suitable for your individual circumstances.
If you have hydroceles affecting both testicles or your clinical needs require treatment outside the scope of the standard package, a different treatment plan and price may apply.
In some cases, your clinical needs may also require additional investigations or treatment outside the scope of the standard package. If this happens, your care may move outside the fixed price package and additional costs may apply.
