This fixed price covers your care for the prostate needle biopsy procedure and up to one consultant follow-up appointment. Your initial consultation is booked and charged separately.

Before your procedure
To proceed with the fixed price package, you will first need to book an initial consultation with a Urology consultant.
During this appointment, your consultant will review your medical history and the results of any previous investigations, such as your prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test or prostate MRI. They will discuss whether a prostate needle biopsy is appropriate and explain the procedure, potential risks and what your results may mean.
If clinically appropriate, your consultant will recommend the biopsy and refer you onto the Fixed Price Package pathway.
You will undergo a clinical pre-assessment to confirm your suitability for the procedure and fixed price package. Your healthcare team will review your medications and allergies, and you should tell them if you take blood-thinning medication.
Depending on the type of biopsy and anaesthetic planned, you will also receive instructions about eating, drinking and taking your usual medications before the procedure.

During your stay
Your hospital fee is included in the fixed price package, along with the anaesthetist fee and your consultant’s fee for carrying out the prostate needle biopsy.
During a prostate biopsy, your consultant takes multiple small tissue samples from different areas of the prostate using a biopsy needle. Ultrasound guidance is used to help accurately position the needle and target the appropriate areas of the prostate.
The biopsy may be performed using a transperineal approach, where the needle passes through the skin between the scrotum and anus, or a transrectal approach, where the biopsy needle passes through the rectum. Your consultant will recommend the most appropriate approach.
Local anaesthetic is commonly used to minimise discomfort. Sedation or general anaesthetic may be used in some cases, particularly for transperineal biopsies involving multiple samples.
The procedure itself usually takes around 20-40 minutes. You will be monitored following the biopsy and can normally return home the same day.
After your procedure
It is normal to experience some mild pain or discomfort following a prostate biopsy. You may also notice some blood in your urine or semen, or minor bleeding from the rectum. These effects are usually temporary and should settle as you recover.
Your clinical team will provide instructions about your recovery and let you know when you can return to your usual activities.
You should seek medical advice if you develop severe or worsening pain, a fever or chills, difficulty passing urine, heavy bleeding or other symptoms that concern you.
The tissue samples collected during your biopsy will be sent to a specialist laboratory for analysis.
Follow-up care
Your package includes up to one follow-up consultation with your consultant.
During your follow-up, your consultant will explain the results of your biopsy, including whether cancer cells have been detected. If prostate cancer is found, the pathology report can provide further information about the cancer, including its Gleason score and ISUP Grade Group.
Your consultant will discuss what your results mean and any appropriate next steps in your care.
Appointment and Treatment Plan
Initial consultation
You will first book an initial consultation with a Urology consultant. During this appointment, your medical history, PSA results, previous imaging and individual risk factors will be reviewed.
Your initial consultation is booked and charged separately from the fixed price package.
Consultant assessment
Your consultant will assess whether a prostate needle biopsy is appropriate and discuss the type of biopsy recommended for your individual circumstances.
If clinically appropriate, you will be referred onto the Fixed Price Package pathway.
Pre-assessment
You will undergo a clinical pre-assessment to confirm your suitability for the procedure and eligibility for the package.
Your clinical team will review your medical history, medications and allergies and provide instructions about preparing for your biopsy.
Price confirmation
Once your suitability is confirmed, your £5,600 fixed price will be agreed and confirmed in writing before your procedure is booked.
Your procedure
Your prostate needle biopsy will be carried out by an experienced consultant, supported by our specialist clinical team.
Using ultrasound guidance, multiple small samples of prostate tissue will be collected and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
The procedure usually takes around 20-40 minutes. You will be monitored afterwards and can normally return home the same day.
Follow-up care
Your package includes up to one consultant follow-up appointment.
During this appointment, your consultant will review your biopsy results with you, explain what they mean and discuss any further monitoring, investigations or treatment that may be appropriate.

About fixed pricing
Eligibility for Fixed Price Packages is determined through a pre-assessment process, which ensures the package is clinically suitable for your individual circumstances.
In some cases, your clinical needs may require additional investigations or treatment outside the scope of the standard package. If this happens, your care may move outside the fixed price package, and additional costs may apply.
Where possible, this will be discussed with you in advance as part of the consent process.
