Before your procedure

To proceed with the fixed price package, you will first need to book an initial consultation with a Urology consultant.

During this appointment, your consultant will discuss your symptoms and medical history and determine whether cystoscopy is an appropriate investigation for you.

Cystoscopy may be recommended to investigate symptoms including blood in the urine, recurrent urinary tract infections, painful or difficult urination or other persistent bladder and urinary symptoms.

If an outpatient cystoscopy is appropriate, your consultant will refer you onto the Fixed Price Package pathway.

You will undergo a clinical pre-assessment to confirm your suitability for the outpatient procedure and fixed price package. Your clinical team will provide any instructions you need to prepare for your cystoscopy.

What’s not included?

  • Initial consultation (booked separately)
  • Tests or investigations arranged before eligibility for the package is confirmed
  • Day case admission
  • Additional procedures or treatment carried out as a result of your findings
  • Additional consultant appointments beyond the one follow-up included in the package
  • Additional treatment if your care becomes more complex than planned
  • Unrelated investigations, treatment or medications

During your appointment

Your hospital fee is included in the fixed price package, along with the anaesthetist fee and your consultant’s fee for carrying out the outpatient cystoscopy.

During a cystoscopy, a thin instrument with a camera and light is gently passed through the urethra and into the bladder. This allows your consultant to examine the lining of your urethra and bladder and identify any abnormalities that may be causing your symptoms.

The procedure usually takes around 10-20 minutes.

As this is an outpatient pathway, you will not be admitted to the hospital as a day case and can normally return home shortly after your procedure.

After your procedure

You may experience some mild burning when passing urine, need to urinate more frequently or notice a small amount of blood in your urine following a cystoscopy. These symptoms are usually temporary.

Drinking plenty of fluids after the procedure can help with your recovery. Your clinical team will provide advice about returning to your normal activities and any symptoms you should look out for.

You should seek medical advice if you develop severe or persistent pain, heavy bleeding or blood clots in your urine, a high temperature or difficulty passing urine.

Follow-up care

Your package includes up to one follow-up consultation with your consultant.

Your consultant will discuss the findings from your cystoscopy and explain whether any further investigation, monitoring or treatment is recommended.

If your consultant determines that you require admission as a day case, the Day Case Cystoscopy Fixed Price Package may be more appropriate.
