Before your procedure

To proceed with the fixed price package, you will first need to book an initial consultation with a Urology consultant.

During this appointment, your consultant will discuss your symptoms and medical history and determine whether cystoscopy is an appropriate investigation for you.

Cystoscopy may be recommended to investigate symptoms including blood in the urine, recurrent urinary tract infections, painful or difficult urination or other persistent bladder and urinary symptoms.

Your consultant will also determine whether the day case pathway is appropriate for the cystoscopy you require.

If clinically appropriate, you will be referred onto the Fixed Price Package pathway.

You will undergo a clinical pre-assessment to confirm your suitability for the procedure and fixed price package. Your clinical team will review your medical history and medications and provide instructions about preparing for your hospital admission.

What’s not included?

  • Initial consultation (booked separately)
  • Tests or investigations arranged before eligibility for the package is confirmed
  • Additional procedures or treatment outside the agreed cystoscopy
  • Additional consultant appointments beyond the one follow-up included in the package
  • Additional treatment if your care becomes more complex than planned
  • Unrelated investigations, treatment or medications

During your stay

Your day case hospital fee is included in the fixed price package, along with the anaesthetist fee and your consultant’s fee for carrying out the cystoscopy.

You will be admitted to the hospital for your procedure and prepared by the clinical team.

During the cystoscopy, an instrument with a camera and light is gently passed through the urethra and into the bladder. This allows your consultant to examine the lining of your urethra and bladder and identify abnormalities that may be causing your symptoms.

The procedure itself can take between 5 and 30 minutes depending on the type of cystoscopy being performed.

Afterwards, you will be monitored during a period of recovery. Once your clinical team is satisfied that you are ready to leave, you can normally return home later the same day.

After your procedure

You may experience some mild burning when passing urine, need to urinate more frequently or notice a small amount of blood in your urine following a cystoscopy. These symptoms are usually temporary.

Your clinical team will provide instructions about your recovery and when you can return to your normal activities.

You should seek medical advice if you develop severe or persistent pain, heavy bleeding or blood clots in your urine, a high temperature or difficulty passing urine.

Follow-up care

Your package includes up to one follow-up consultation with your consultant.

Your consultant will discuss the findings from your cystoscopy and explain whether any further investigation, monitoring or treatment is recommended.

About fixed pricing

Eligibility for Fixed Price Packages is determined through a pre-assessment process, which ensures the package is suitable for your individual circumstances.

The £1,800 package applies specifically to cystoscopy performed as a day case, including admission to the hospital and recovery before discharge.

If your consultant determines that your cystoscopy can be performed without day case admission, the Outpatient Cystoscopy Fixed Price Package may be more appropriate.

Where possible, this will be discussed with you in advance as part of the consent process.
