What are varicose veins?

Causes and symptoms of varicose veins

Varicose veins are a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. The causes of varicose veins can be attributed to a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Some of the most common causes of varicose veins include:

  • Genetics: Having a family history of varicose veins greatly raises the chances of developing them. If your parents or grandparents had varicose veins, you are more likely to experience them as well.
  • Age: Varicose veins are more common in older adults, as the veins lose their elasticity and become weaker over time.
  • Obesity: Excess weight can put pressure on the veins, causing them to become swollen and twisted.
  • Prolonged standing or sitting: People who stand or sit for long periods, such as nurses, teachers, or office workers, are more likely to develop varicose veins.
  • Hormonal changes: Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, menopause, or puberty can cause varicose veins.

The symptoms of varicose veins can vary from person to person, but common symptoms include:

  • Aching or pain in the legs
  • Swelling or inflammation in the legs
  • Itching or burning sensation in the legs
  • Heavy or tired feeling in the legs
  • Visible twisted or bulging veins

Understanding the causes and symptoms of varicose veins can help you identify the condition early and seek appropriate treatment.

Why you might need a varicose veins laser treatment

Endovenous Laser Ablation may be advised for aesthetic reasons or if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Painful, heavy and uncomfortable legs
  • Swollen feet and ankles
  • Burning or aching in your legs
  • Muscle cramps, mostly at night
  • Dry, prickly skin over the affected vein

Who is a good candidate for endovenous laser ablation?

Endovenous laser ablation is a minimally invasive method designed to treat varicose veins. To be a good candidate for this procedure, you should:

  • Have visible varicose veins that are causing symptoms such as pain, swelling, or itching
  • Be in good overall health
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Not have a history of deep vein thrombosis or blood clots
  • Not have a pacemaker or other implantable medical device
  • Be willing to follow post-procedure instructions and wear compression stockings as directed

It’s crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to assess whether endovenous laser ablation is the appropriate treatment option for you. They will evaluate your condition and provide personalised recommendations based on your unique needs and medical history.

Before surgery

Before undergoing endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) for varicose veins, patients typically have an initial consultation with a vascular specialist. During this consultation, the doctor reviews the patient’s medical history, performs a physical examination, and may use ultrasound imaging to evaluate the affected veins and determine the extent of venous insufficiency. The ultrasound helps map out the veins to guide the procedure. Patients are usually advised to avoid certain medications, like blood thinners, in the days leading up to the surgery. Additionally, fasting for a few hours may be required, depending on the clinic’s guidelines. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, so patients should arrange for someone to drive them home afterward.

On the day of the procedure, the medical team prepares the treatment area by sterilising it and administering a local anaesthetic to numb the skin and tissue around the vein. Compression stockings may also be provided, which patients will need to wear post-procedure to aid in healing and minimise swelling. Clear instructions are given regarding what to expect during and after the surgery, ensuring patients are fully prepared.

During surgery

Endovenous Laser Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthetic. Before and during the procedure the vein will be monitored via ultrasound imagery.

The surgeon will make a small cut or incision in the skin through which a catheter is passed and inserted into the varicose vein. A laser fibre will then be passed through the catheter into the vein. As the catheter is slowly removed, the laser fibre will heat up the length of the vein causing it to close up and shrink.

The laser fibre targets the vein walls, causing them to heat up and collapse.

The cut where the catheter was inserted will likely be small enough that you won’t need stitches. A bandage will be put on the site and your surgeon may recommend using support stockings for recovery.

The procedure takes roughly 45 -90 minutes to perform, depending on the number of veins being treated.

After surgery

After the laser surgery, most patients are able to go about their normal daily activities within a day or two, though strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for about a week. Compression stockings must be worn for several days or weeks to support blood flow and reduce swelling. It’s common to experience mild bruising, swelling, or a sensation of tightness along the treated vein, which typically resolves within a few weeks. Over-the-counter pain relievers may be recommended if discomfort arises.

Follow-up appointments are usually scheduled within a week or two to assess the success of the procedure. During these visits, the doctor may perform an ultrasound to ensure the vein is properly sealed and there are no complications, such as blood clots. Over time, the treated vein shrinks and is naturally absorbed by the body, improving the appearance of varicose veins and alleviating symptoms like pain or heaviness. Most patients find significant relief after the procedure, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and weight management, is essential to prevent the development of new varicose veins.
